Nick Brown - Bishop High School National Honor Society
Membership in the NHS requires students to participate in community service projects. For the 2010-11 school year, Nick will be assisting the Mother Teresa Shelter in Corpus Christi. Throughout the year, he will be available to speak to other community organizations to raise the public's awareness of the shelter and the numerous services provided to those in need. He will also be collecting donations for the shelter - either financial or contribution of goods. Items that the shelter are most in need of are toiletries (toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, deodorant, razors, etc.) towels, blankets, jackets, coats, and clothing.
Corpus Christi has an estimated population of 5,000 homeless persons, with 27 dying on the streets last year. The Mother Teresa Shelter provides showers and laundry, lockers for personal item storage, phone and internet service, media to keep their clients informed and instructed, bus tokens, and between meal snacks daily, and breakfast on weekends. The shelter also provides first aid, assists with SSA, SSI and VA benefits, provides referral letters to other agencies and clinics and works with MHMR and the Health department to diagnose and treat disorders and illness.
If you are interested in donating money or goods, or are interested in volunteering your time, please contact us at Sunrise Rotary, and we will forward your information to the shelter.
